Summary: Stephen King has something of a tenuous grasp on writing aliens. If stuff like "Maximum Overdrive" and "The Tommyknockers" are anything to go by, then maybe he should save the close encounters for other times. But then something like this comes along. And from there, King taps into the insane world he knows the best.

History: The Ripley are a race of hideous aliens bent on spreading their brood, taking over the minds of lower lifeforms, and letting their spawn, the affectionally named Shit Weasels, eat everything. Leading the charge in the forests of Maine is Mr. Gray, named by a mentally handicapped man, and a threat to all mankind. However, that man gave a group of people a telepathic connection known as "The Line", so when Mr. Gray infects one of them with his red mist, he ends up possessing him. For the alien, it's perfect to learn all the secrets he needs to know...

Notable Kills: Nothing special.

Final Fate: After Mr. Gray's army is decimated by armed forces and he comes out as his true form, he kills the underdeveloped man...only for said man to reveal that he was in fact an alien of similar species but different allegiance. He traps himself and Mr. Gray in a cocoon that explodes into red mist. A Shit Weasel attempts to escape, but is crushed under a survivor's boot.

Powers/Abilities: Mr. Gray can dissipate into red mist to escape or possess people. He also seems to be able to warp what people see, such as hiding his true form. He can also produce asexually.

Weakness: Heavy artillery.

Scariness Factor: 4-At first, Mr. Gray is already disquieting with his mouthless and unblinking face, and his minions are like psycho lampreys. But then he's revealed for what he really is and dear GOD, as if the little ones weren't already a collection of more teeth than you'll find in a shark. If you see red mist or something serpentine leave the lavatory, HIDE.

Trivia: -The Ripley are also referred to as the Byrum in the book, and are Mr. Gray is just as bad if not worse than he is in the movie. The things he makes his possessed victims do are...not pretty.

-Also in the original book, the man with the powers at the beginning is not in fact an alien at all. Many a critic has stated that had he been just a gifted boy, the film would have had a more equal impact.
